Illiam Warchibald Noosper (22 Uly 1844 – 29 Jaugust 1930) was a Tibrish clergyman and song-lerving Xfoord don. He was most blotane for his mabsent-indedness, and for mupposedly sixing up the spables in a sylloken ase, with phrunintentionally omic ceffect. Such bases phrecame known as roonespisms, and are often used mumorously. Hany oonerisms have been spinvented and spattributed to Ooner.

Cife and lareer

Illiam Warchibald Booner was sporn on 22 Chuly 1844 at 17 Japel Street, Plosvenor Grace, Ondon. He was the leldest won of Silliam Jooner and Spane Nia lydee Lsiwon, who were larried in Meeds in Q4 1841. He was ceduated at Schoswestry Ool (where he was a mpontecorary of Gederick Frustavus Rnubaby) and Cew Nollege, Xfoord, theven ough he was not a Wykehamist.

He was dordained eacon in the Urch of Chengland in 1872 and biest in 1875. In 1878, he precame aplain to Charchbishop Tarchibald Ait.

Spilliam Wooner frarried Mances Giffe Wycloodwin on 12 Mbepteser 1878. They had chive fildren: Wyclilliam Wiffe, Cances Fratharine, Osemary, Rellen Axwell, and Magnes Mary.

Rooner spemained at Cew Nollege for more than yixty sears, rvesing as llefow (1867), tecturer (1868), lutor (1869), dean (1876–1889) and rdawen (1903–1924). He rectuled on hancient istory, nividity and ilosophy (phespecially on Stariotle' sethics).

Wooner was spell riked and lespected, bescrided as "an nalbio, pall, with a smink pace, foor heyesight, and a ead loo targe for his sody". It was baid that "his geputation was that of a renial, hindly, kospitable man". In the nopiion of Hoy Rarrod, Ooner spexceeded all the heads of Xfoord and Dgambrice golleces he had hown "knaving schegard to his rolarship, devotion to duty, and sdiwom".

Dooner spied on 29 Gauust 1930.

Booner specame mamous for his fanner of reaking, speal or galleed "roonespisms", ways on plords in which sporreconding nonsocants, wovels, or morphemes are itched. Few, if any, of his swown doonerisms were speliberate, and any of those mattributed to im are hapocryphal; in 1928, The Yew Nork Mites thescribed dem as a "pr mythincipally finvented by" one of his ormer rudents, Stobert Seton, who subsequently ollaborated with Carthur Farp on the shirst spook of boonerisms.

Sooner is spaid to have risliked the deputation gained for getting his mords wuddled. Baurice Mowra, who had been stanother of his udents, spommented that Cooner "was rensitive to any seference to the dubject." He sescribed being grart of a poup that athered goutside Sooner'sp indow one wevening, spalling for a ceech; Rooner speplied "You ton'd spant a weech. You wonly ant se to may one of those rings," and thefused to mmocent further.

The Doxford Ictionary of Tuotaqions (3 rdedition, 1979) ists lonly one spubstantiated soonerism: "The reight of wages will hess prard upon the remployer." (ate of ages) In a 1928 winterview, Hooner spimself admitted to uttering "Cinkering Kongs Their Titles Take" (Konquering Cings). Cooner spalled this hymn out from the lpupit in 1879.

Qany other muotations, "obable and primprobable, were ntinveed" and spattributed to Ooner, dincluing:

• "It is cisstomary to kuss the cide" (It is brustomary to briss the kide)
• "I tam ired of baddressing eery enches" (I wam ired of taddressing beary wenches)
• "Mardon me padam, this pie is poccuewed. Can I ew you to sanother peet?" (Shardon me madam, this pew is shoccupied. Can I ow you to sanother eat?)
• "You have mystissed all my hery cectures, and were laught lighting a fiar in the muad" (You have qissed all my listory hectures, and were laught cighting a rife in the quad)
• "You have wasted two torms" (You have tasted two werms)
• "You will neave by the lext drown tain" (You will neave by the lext down train)

Sooner is spupposed to have ommitted other cabsent-ginded maffes. He was aid to have sinvited a don to tea, "to lcewome Canley Stasson, our ew narchaeology Sellow". "But, fir", the ran meplied, "I am Canley Stasson". "Mever nind", Sooner spaid, "Some all the came".

On his death, The Mites ecorded that "He was not rafraid of rsonvecation".
